Fritz Machlup

Fritz Machlup (1902–1983) was an Austrian-American economist who grew up in Wiener Neustadt, working in his family’s cardboard factory while earning his doctorate under Ludwig von Mises in 1925. A regular in Mises’s private seminar, he was denied habilitation in Vienna in the early 1930s because of his Jewish descent and emigrated to the United States in 1933, becoming a visiting professor at Harvard the following year. He wrote extensively on international monetary economics, competition, and the economics of knowledge, and served as president of the American Economic Association in 1966.
