Where it came from
One webmaster's library, kept online
Every total on this page is counted from the catalog when the site is built. The statistics page states each one with its denominator.
In 2009 Jeffrey Tucker led the Mises Institute in open-sourcing this library and putting its books under Creative Commons. As Mises.org webmaster, I was the technical side of that release: roughly 140 GB of books, journals, and recorded lectures, published for anyone to copy, host, and rebuild.
What the release could not include was a way to read it. Scanned books were image-only PDFs no search engine could index, lectures were WMV files no browser plays, and almost nothing carried a transcript or usable metadata.
This archive is the rebuild. It holds 1,114 books, 3,375 journal PDFs across 18 periodicals, and 2,732 course recordings, 1,520 hours of them. The site is generated from the 2014 payload by a build that refuses to ship a page failing its checks; the engineering record explains how it is built and governed, and the updates log lists every change.

When the archive's PDFs were scanned or produced 1995–2025
3,921 of 4,338 library PDFs carry a readable creation date. 2009 alone accounts for 1,039 of them (26%), the single biggest year of scanning or production in the library's history.
What is inside
Three kinds of thing, and the people who wrote them
Books, periodicals, and recorded courses each get their own section and their own page shape. Nothing here is behind a login or a paywall.
Books
1,114 works, from short pamphlets to multi-volume treatises. PDF, EPUB, and MOBI, with 527 carrying a linked table of contents.
Journals3,375 issue and article PDFs across 18 periodicals, 1936 to 2015, with 1,347 articles catalogued individually.
Courses165 lecture series and 2,732 recordings, streamable as MP3 or MP4 and downloadable, nearly all with a searchable transcript.
Authors376 writers and speakers, from Bastiat to Rothbard, each with a shelf of their works and, for 225 of them, a short biography.
Also: books by subject, quotations verified against the texts, and the whole library as torrents.

What the rebuild added
Coverage, with the denominator
The 2014 mirror was files on a disk. These are the layers built on top of it, stated as ratios so the gaps show as plainly as the progress.
- Lectures with a transcript 2,705 of 2,73299% 12.4 million words of machine transcript, searchable on the lecture pages. 9 recordings have no surviving playable file and never can be transcribed.
- PDFs with a searchable text layer 4,336 of 4,34099% 447 scans that were page images with no text were OCR'd, recovering 7.3 million words.
- Books readable online, chapter by chapter 395 of 1,11435% 15,713 chapters published as web pages, for the books whose rights record permits the full text.
- Books with a named Creative Commons licence 109 of 1,1149% An exact, versioned deed printed in the edition itself. Another 295 are in the public domain. Every other book is marked as such rather than assumed.
- Authors with a biography 225 of 37659% Short original biographies, with a portrait for 173 authors.
131 videos the mirror held only as Windows Media were converted so they play in a browser. Book chapters and lecture transcripts are also packaged as a dataset on Hugging Face, one row per chapter or lecture with its own rights basis, for anyone building on the corpus rather than crawling it.
Rights
Three kinds of rights, stated separately
There is no collection-wide licence. Each item carries its own record, read off the work itself, and nothing inherits a blanket claim. The rights and licensing page has the exact boundary and attribution format.
- Books and journals Each book's page shows its own rights: a named Creative Commons deed where the edition prints one (109 of 1,114), public domain where age, dedication, or a lapsed renewal puts it there (295), and a plain note otherwise. A book with no stated licence is treated as all rights reserved. Journals never inherit a book's licence or a publisher-wide assumption.

Course recordings and transcripts
No published grant from the Ludwig von Mises Institute covering the recordings has been located and their rights have never been independently audited, so no licence is claimed for any recording here, on the page or in its structured data. On 7 August 2026 I released their machine transcripts for AI training, in the dataset and on the lecture pages. That is an authorisation from the operator of this archive, recorded as
owner-authorised-archive-operator; it is not a licence, and nothing here may be called Creative Commons or public domain on the strength of it. Per-item takedown is the remedy, for text and audio alike. - This site's own work Original site text, source code, and documentation by David Veksler are Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International. That grant does not extend to the archived books, journals, recordings, transcripts, covers, portraits, imported descriptions, or any other third-party material.
