Bentham's protest of 1793 against taxes on legal proceedings, printed in the 1818 volume that also holds his Defence of Usury. He argues that court fees and stamp duties on lawsuits deny justice to the poor, raise revenue in a way that punishes claimants, and should give way to a system of open and cheap access to the courts.
