Austrian theory & method The state & socialism

First published in Norwegian in 1938, the English translation of Hoff's work didn't appear until 1949, and was not widely available. As a survey of the debate on socialist calculation, and a defense of the pure Mises-Hayek position, this work deserves more attention than it has received. He covers a myriad of objections to the idea that by socializing the means of production, government wrecks the ability to calculate. He also addresses still-common criticisms of the capitalist production process.

Yes. The complete 271-page PDF, EPUB, and Kindle downloads directly from this page (18.4 MB). There is no signup, no account and no paywall.
How long is Economic Calculation in the Socialist Society?
271 pages, 22 chapters, and about 94,543 words in the edition this archive serves.
Is Economic Calculation in the Socialist Society in the public domain?
Believed so. US works published between 1932 and 1963 kept copyright past 28 years only if someone filed a renewal, and no renewal for this work was found in the Catalog of Copyright Entries. That is a search result rather than a legal opinion: a renewal filed under a shortened title or a different claimant would not have been found. Some copies carry a rights notice, which records the original claim and does not extend a term that lapsed.
Who wrote Economic Calculation in the Socialist Society?
Trygve J. B. Hoff (1895–1982) was a Norwegian economist, businessman, and writer. He is best known as the editor of the Norwegian business magazine Farmand.
