John Rae's 1895 biography of Adam Smith, long the standard account of his life. Rae drew on research in the archives of Glasgow and Edinburgh universities and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, including Hume's correspondence, to follow Smith from Kirkcaldy through Glasgow, his years in France, and his work on The Wealth of Nations.
