Cairnes's 1875 statement of the method of classical economics. He holds that economics is a hypothetical, deductive science whose premises come from introspection and everyday observation of human motives, and that its results cannot be tested by statistics the way physical laws are. The book is often cited alongside Senior and Mill on the methodology of the science.
