A weekly essay paper by John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, begun in 1720, collected in book form in four volumes. Its fifty-three essays attack the power and privileges of the established clergy in Britain. The authors wrote it just before Cato's Letters, and Gordon carried it on after Trenchard's death in 1723.
