Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) was the acknowledged leader of the Austrian School of economics and a prolific author on economic theory, epistemology, and political philosophy. He worked at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce for 35 years while producing his major theoretical works, habilitating in 1912 with The Theory of Money and Credit and later condensing his life’s work into Nationalökonomie (1940), reworked in English as Human Action (1949). He argued from early on that economic calculation is impossible under socialism and consistently opposed state intervention in the economy, work that brought him neither wealth nor academic honors in his lifetime.
