Böhm-Bawerk's survey of interest theories from antiquity to the 1880s, first published in German in 1884 and translated by William A. Smart in 1890. He sorts earlier explanations into productivity, use, abstinence, and labor families, finds each wanting, and clears the ground for the time-preference theory he developed in the companion volume, The Positive Theory of Capital.
