Hans-Hermann Hoppe turns the standard story of political progress on its head. The state is an evil in every form, he argues, but monarchy is in many ways less pernicious than democracy, whose rulers are temporary custodians with every reason to spend what they do not own.
He traces the path from aristocracy through monarchy to democracy and the centralised state it produced, then proposes radical decentralisation and secession as the way out. The edition has an introduction by David Gordon.
