Hans-Hermann Hoppe (born 1949) is a German-American economist and philosopher who completed his dissertation under Jürgen Habermas before moving to the United States and studying under Murray Rothbard, whose chair at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas he eventually took over. In Kritik der kausalwissenschaftlichen Sozialforschung (1983) he argued that economics cannot be an empirical science and must instead be an a priori science of action, and in A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism (1989) and Democracy: The God That Failed (2001) he developed a natural-law critique of socialism and democracy. In 2006 he founded the Property and Freedom Society, a forum in the Mises-Rothbard tradition.
