Peanuts for Defense

We find a trade association of the American leather glove industry offering this argument for high tariffs: "Warm gloves, properly made, are indispensable in cold climates. The soldier, sailor or aviator who suffers the loss of his hands becomes, at once, a helpless liability.. '.. To turn out the millions of gloves neces sary to protect our service forces requires a healthy glove industry within our own borders. We must, therefore, be cautious, in the interests of national de fense, when doing anything which would tend to 65 destroy a United States industry and leave us depend ent upon foreign producers in time of war." The spokesman for another industry-one in which a large amount of highly skilled hand labor is involved and which finds it increasingly difficult to compete with foreign producers-says that the skills of their workers are highly useful in time of war, and high tariffs are necessary to insure the industry's survival in this country in anticipation of such an emergency.
