Rothbard argues depressions are caused not by capitalism but central-bank-driven credit expansion. He traces this Austrian theory from Hume and Ricardo through Mises and Hayek and argues 1929 and the Great Depression were caused and prolonged by Federal Reserve credit expansion and Hoover-Roosevelt intervention, not laissez-faire.
