Murray N. Rothbard (1926–1995) was an American economist, economic historian, and libertarian political philosopher, and perhaps Ludwig von Mises’s most important American student, attending Mises’s NYU seminar in the 1950s. He earned a B.A. in mathematics and a Ph.D. in economics at Columbia University and taught at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (1966–1986) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (1986–1995). His Man, Economy, and State (1962) extended Austrian monetary, monopoly, and capital theory, and America’s Great Depression (1963) argued that 1920s monetary inflation, not free markets, caused the 1929 crash. He wrote more than a thousand articles and 25 books, including works on political philosophy, and became a leading figure of the libertarian movement.
