The anonymous first edition of Malthus's Essay, written as a reply to Godwin and Condorcet. It argues that population tends to grow geometrically while food supply grows only arithmetically, so that misery and vice check numbers. The short 1798 text is the original form of the argument, before Malthus revised and greatly expanded it in later editions.
