The sixth and last edition Malthus saw through the press, in two volumes. The argument of 1798 is now backed by a survey of population and its checks across many countries and periods, and moral restraint is added to misery and vice as a check. It is the standard text for the mature Malthusian theory and its later influence on Darwin and on poor-law debates.
